Members of the Urology Department treat a variety of urinary, genital and reproductive disorders and conditions, including:
Cancer of the genital-urinary system is common; fortunately, when detected early, it is treatable and the prognosis is good. For men, prostate cancer represents the most prevalent cancer and is the second leading cause of death behind lung cancer. Bladder and kidney cancers commonly occur in both men and women at any age, while testicular cancer is often found in younger men.
Urinary Problems
The urethra is the tube responsible for emptying the bladder. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra and, in men, grows in size with age and may obstruct the flow of urine. Common symptoms of an enlarged prostate are frequent nighttime urination (nocturia), difficulty initiating or stopping urination, frequency/urgency during the day, decreased force of stream and urinary leakage. Although these symptoms may be caused by benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), other disorders may cause difficulty with urination, including prostate cancer, bladder cancer, bladder stones and bladder hyperactivity. BPH can be treated with medicine, surgery or a new in-office procedure called transurethral needle ablation (TUNA).Although the adrenal gland is part of the Endocrine System, Urologists are trained in the surgical treatment of disorders of the adrenal gland, including enlargement due to cancer or removal for an improperly functioning gland. Surgery on the adrenal gland can now most often be completed using laparoscopy rather than through large incisions.
Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are a common disorder seen by Urologists. Fortunately, there are numerous options for treatment, including extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) which directs sounds waves at stones to fragment them, laser lithotripsy which uses laser energy to break up stones, and medicines that dissolve stones and help prevent their recurrence.
