A genetic consultation at the Center for Medical Genetics is a confidential outpatient visit with a genetic counselor and a medical geneticist. Most insurance policies cover genetic consultations.

A genetic consultation includes:

• Documenting your personal and family history
  
• Discussing genetic concepts and your risk for disease
  
• Discussing the risks, benefits and limitations of genetic testing
  
• Helping you to obtain insurance coverage for genetic testing
  
• Providing information on privacy laws regarding genetic information
  
• Interpreting test results and their effect on your family members’ risks
  
• Providing education on prognosis and treatment
  
• Making medical management recommendations
  
• Describing available diagnostic and screening tests
  
• Giving emotional support
  
• Helping you to share the information with your family
  
• Suggesting referrals when needed
