Electrophysiology (also known as "EP") is a cardiac subspecialty dedicated to treating heart rhythm disorders.
Evanston Northwestern Healthcare employs a multidisciplinary approach for heart rhythm disturbances including medication management; or one of our advanced technologies, such as cardiac ablation, implantable defibrillator or pacemaker. Diagnosis and treatment is performed in our dedicated “EP” labs located at Evanston and Highland Park Hospital. The new “EP labs” feature state-of-the-art imaging and mapping systems, enhancing ENH’s ability to offer the most sophisticated and innovative treatment to patients with heart rhythm disturbances.
During these procedures, catheters are placed in the heart to diagnose a patient’s heart rhythm disturbance. These procedures are performed to determine the cause and origin of abnormal heart beats and to determine the appropriate course of treatment.
ENH is also among the first facilities to offer cardiac resynchronization therapy or biventricular pacing, a therapeutic breakthrough for heart failure therapy. This new therapy uses an implantable device to improve the pumping efficiency of the heart.
