Sarcoma

Why Choose Evanston Northwestern Healthcare for Sarcoma Care?

Although sarcomas don’t have the same level of public recognition as cancers of the breast or lung and are considered generally “uncommon,” they are well-known and skillfully treated by the physicians and surgeons of Evanston Northwestern Healthcare (ENH). As you are probably aware, there are a wide variety or “subtypes” of sarcomas. The common denominator is that they are cancer cells that arise from or resemble normal connective tissues in the body. Patients who choose ENH for their sarcoma care often do so because of our strong clinical program, which is reinforced by ongoing research.

Our Surgeons

When diagnosed with a sarcoma, your oncologist will likely recommend surgery as a large piece of the treatment to overcome the cancer. ENH’s Department of Surgery is led by Mark Talamonti, MD Chairman, and Stephen Sener, MD, Vice Chairman Stephen Sener, MD, is a past national President of the American Cancer Society. David P. Winchester, MD, past Chairman of the Department of Surgery, also leads a key committee of the National Academy of Sciences and serves as Medical Director of National Cancer Programs, American College of Surgeons.

A Whole Team Dedicated to Your Care

On a bi-weekly basis, our multidisciplinary team convenes to discuss each patient’s case in detail and to construct a customized treatment plan. Our team consists of board certified, fellowship trained physicians and surgeons working closely with the specialists that become an integral part recovery. These meetings of the minds are focused on each individual patient’s condition, to create the path for the most optimal outcome. At any point during treatment, any of the team members can use or electronic medical record system to check test results and confer with other specialists. The end of the “overstuffed manila folder” method of medical recordkeeping means that patients receive quick, reliable answers to their questions about tests or lab results.

Innovative Care

Sarcomas are a rare breed of cancer that require care be provided by specialists focused on treatments of these diseases for optimal outcomes. Dr. Bruce Brockstein, leads our team of specialists who focus on the recovery of patients with sarcomas. This team takes pride in providing proven treatments along with newer sciences and technologies such as clinical research and drug trials. We are one of the select locations to take part in the clinical trials for AMG 706 or GIST (Gastrointestinal Stromo Tumors), an aggressive new oral treatment for sarcomas of the gastrointestinal tract.
